If you have discolored, chipped, or poorly shaped front teeth you might be a good candidate for veneers. We can help you redesign your smile!
What is a veneer?
A veneer can best be described as a porcelain “shell” that covers the front of your teeth. The shell is bonded to the front of your teeth with dentalcement, which holds them in place.
How are veneers created?
In some cases we may be able to use chairside CEREC technology to create veneers on site. In other cases we also would send them to a lab to be fabricated. Every person is different, and much depends on your specific case.
If your veneers must be created the traditional way we will start by taking x-rays as well as impressions of your mouth and teeth. We will then “prep” your teeth. You will generally need a local anesthetic for this, as this involves removing 0.3-0.5 millimeters of enamel from the tooth’s surface. The veneer will actually replace the enamel on your tooth.
Next, we’ll take a model or make an impression of your tooth. This model will be sent on to the dental lab. It will typically take them two weeks to construct your veneers and send them back.
Once the veneers are ready we’ll bring you back in for a second appointment. We’ll temporarily place your veneer just to examine the fit and the color. Once we’re sure everything is as it should be, we clean your tooth and prepare it for cementing.
We then cement the veneer to the tooth. This cement dries very quickly because we use a special light wand that lets us to cure the cement in under a minute. We can then move on to removing excess cement. We’ll evaluate your bite and then make any final, necessary adjustments. Some patients will need additional follow-up appointments, just to ensure that everything is going well.
How do veneers function after they are applied?
You can use your teeth normally once the veneers are in place! You can eat, smile, and talk; same as you ever did. You will just want to avoid putting your teeth under special strains. If you grind your teeth at night you might need to wear a special mouth guard to avoid damaging your veneers as you sleep.
